What Is Quartz (Engineered Stone)?

Quartz is the best countertop for low-maintenance households. Engineered from ~90% crushed quartz crystals and polymer resins. Non-porous — never needs sealing.

  • Pros: Stain/scratch/bacteria resistant · consistent colour · clean with soap and water

  • Cons: Not heat resistant (use trivets) · discolours in sunlight (no outdoor use) · visible seams

  • Maintenance: None | Heat Resistance: Poor | Sealing: No | Lifespan: 25+ years

  • Brands in Canada: Cambria, Silestone, Caesarstone, MSI Q Quartz, Vicostone, Hanstone

What Is Granite?

Granite is the best countertop for heat resistance and natural stone character. 100% natural igneous stone. Each slab is unique. Requires sealing every 1–2 years.

  • Pros: Excellent heat/scratch resistance · unique natural patterns · adds resale value

  • Cons: Requires sealing · porous if unsealed · heavy (needs reinforced cabinetry) · can chip at edges

  • Maintenance: Seal every 1–2 years | Heat Resistance: Excellent | Sealing: Yes | Lifespan: 20+ years

Ontario climate note: Humid summers and dry winters make annual sealing important to prevent moisture absorption.

What Is Quartzite and How Is It Different From Quartz?

Quartzite is the most durable natural stone countertop. It is harder than granite. Natural metamorphic rock with marble-like aesthetics. Quartzite is NOT quartz.

  • Pros: Harder than granite · resists etching better than marble · heat resistant · unique slabs

  • Cons: Requires sealing · more expensive than granite or quartz · limited colour range · some slabs mislabeled

  • Maintenance: Seal every 1–2 years | Heat Resistance: Excellent | Sealing: Yes | Lifespan: 20+ years

  • Popular varieties: Taj Mahal, White Macaubas, Sea Pearl, Super White

Note: Fantasy Brown is often mislabeled as quartzite but is actually a dolomitic marble.

Is Marble a Good Countertop Material?

Marble is the best countertop for luxury aesthetics. It requires the most maintenance of any natural stone. Etches from acidic liquids (lemon, wine, vinegar). Softer than granite and quartzite.

  • Pros: Unmatched elegance and veining · cool surface ideal for baking · increases home value

  • Cons: Etches from acids · stains easily · requires sealing multiple times per year · scratches easily

  • Maintenance: High — seal frequently | Heat Resistance: Good | Sealing: Yes — multiple times/year | Lifespan: 20+ years with diligent care

Are Porcelain Slab Countertops Worth It?

Yes, for outdoor kitchens and UV exposure Porcelain is the best countertop. Clay-based material fired at extreme temperatures. Non-porous. Can mimic marble, granite, or concrete.

  • Pros: Heat/UV/scratch resistant · no sealing · suitable outdoors · lightweight

  • Cons: Can chip during installation · limited edge profiles · fewer experienced fabricators · higher cost than quartz

  • Maintenance: None | Heat Resistance: Excellent | Sealing: No | Lifespan: 25+ years

Growing in popularity across Ontario for outdoor kitchens and sunrooms where UV resistance matters.

What Is Corian (Solid Surface) and How Is It Different From Quartz?

Corian is the best countertop for seamless joints and integrated sinks. ~33% acrylic resin, ~66% natural minerals. Damage can be sanded out. Corian is NOT quartz. Corian is NOT natural stone.

  • Pros: Nearly invisible seams · non-porous · repairable · integrated sinks possible · 100+ colours · GREENGUARD Gold certified

  • Cons: Not heat resistant · scratches easier than stone · lower resale value than stone

  • Maintenance: Low — buff out scratches | Heat Resistance: Poor | Sealing: No | Lifespan: 10–20 years

  • Brands in Canada: Corian (DuPont), Staron (Samsung), Hi-Macs (LG), Wilsonart, Meganite

Are Butcher Block Countertops a Good Choice?

Butcher block is the best countertop for warmth, natural texture and quieter surface. Hardwood strips (maple, oak, or walnut) glued into thick slabs. Can be sanded and refinished.

  • Pros: Warm aesthetic · refinishable · affordable vs stone · quieter surface · eco-friendly

  • Cons: Requires monthly oiling · susceptible to water/stains/scratches · bacteria risk · scorches from heat

  • Maintenance: High — oil monthly | Heat Resistance: Poor | Sealing: Yes — oil monthly | Lifespan: 20+ years with care

Canadian maple is commonly used and readily sourced in Ontario.

Are Laminate Countertops Worth It?

Laminate is the most affordable countertop material so if budget is a concern this is the best option. Layers of plastic bonded to particleboard or MDF. Cannot be repaired.

  • Pros: Lowest cost · wide variety of colours · lightweight · no sealing · DIY-friendly
